Lift your mood with a glass of wine

No wonder teetotalers are so moody, whiny and just plain glum: NOT drinking is bringing them down! New research confirms what you and I already know, and that's the simple fact that drinkers -- especially wine drinkers -- are less likely to be depressed than people who don't drink at all. Drink a little, like a glass or two a week, and your depression risk will drop by a little. Drink more -- like a glass or two a day -- and that risk will plunge by a third, according to the study of more than 5,500 men and women over the age of 55 tracked for seven years. Of course, tell your own doctor that you're drinking to lift your mood and he'll probably faint. Once he gets back on his feet, he'll yammer on about studies that show some drinkers have a HIGHER risk of depression. Here's what he won't tell you: Those studies include both people who were depressed first, and then turned to drink later to cope, as well as hopeless alkies who have all sorts of problems up to and including depression. The new study is different, because nobody was depressed in the beginning -- so it offers the first HONEST look at what happens over the long-term when you drink or don't drink. So go ahead and drink up. Along with keeping you happy, booze -- whether it's wine, beer, sake, liquor or a little bit of everything -- can keep you healthy by slashing your risk of major diseases such as heart disease and dementia.
